Sportbikes / Is it possible/reasonable to just swap out the engine?
« on: December 24, 2008, 09:01:55 PM »
Basically, could you just get another one stroke engine from some other bike and swap it in the zongshen? I'm really stretching here, but if my engine is blown, I don't know that I wan't to put another zongshen engine in it.

Can we increase the number of posts per page? I looked through the user control panel, but couldn't find anything.

Hang Out / Personal Picture thread!

I figured it's nice to have a face to the posters here, so if you're up for it, post your picture! Or, even just a picture of your cars or house or something!

This is a really douchey picture, but it's the latest one I have and I was mostly 'demoing' my new fancy-pants shirt (fancy-shirt shirt?) And I have red eye. Do I have enough disclaimers?

Sportbikes / Damn it!
« on: October 01, 2008, 04:10:11 PM »
Well, my bike is out of commission. I was riding it home from the DMV after getting my motorcycle endorsement (seriously,) and it started to die as I came to stops. To counter, this I started giving it a little gas to keep the idle up.

Well, I got a little further and then my bike started making this ridiculous horrid squeaking/grinding sound as I was riding (it's very hard to describe) and the bike turned off.

I pulled in the clutch and coasted off the road and stopped. I looked in my oil tank and saw that it was low so I got a ride home, got some oil, and came back and added some. The bike started up and I rode it around the parking lot where I was. All seemed to be going well until the squeaking/grinding sound came back and then the bike violently shut off.

As I restarted it, it died again, i started it again, gave it some gas to try to keep it running, and it violently shut off again. Then the starter wouldn't even work. I would press the starter button and it would make one little sound and that's it.

So, with that said the bike is sitting in a parking lot and now that it's finally legal for me to ride it, I can't. Ideas?

Sportbikes / What does it take for you to start your bike? (+bonus q)
« on: August 30, 2008, 08:22:49 PM »
Do you pull the choke out? Do you have to give it gas?

For me, if it's a little cold outside (50 degrees or so) I definitely HAVE to have the choke pulled out to even think about starting it. Even then, I have to give it throttle and hold it for a little bit until it's warmed up enough or it will shut off. But even when it's warm out, I have to pull the choke out and give it throttle to start. I guess I'm kind of wondering if that's normal or if I should just be able to push the ignition button without doing anything else. I can start the bike without the choke pulled out, but I have to give it more throttle and kind of hold it for a bit until once again it gets warmed up. So what's it like for you guys?

Bonus question!! Should I re-tune the carb since I'm in the mountains? (4700 ft. elevation) and if so, how do I go about doing that. I looked on the carb for a screw or something and ended up messing up the idle instead. Which way to I turn the screw (wherever it is) to add more fuel or less fuel? Thanks!

Sportbikes / Is there a rev limiter on the bike? (At 6500rpms?)
« on: August 11, 2008, 08:03:51 PM »
I know that during the break in period on the bike, you're not supposed to take it past 6500 RPMs, but will it prevent you from doing so until you've logged 1000kms on the spedometer?

Whenever I get to about that point the bike starts to lurch a little bit and it feels bogged down. Any ideas why?

Sportbikes / Minor problems causing a big head ache (gauge problems)
« on: August 07, 2008, 10:28:00 AM »
I've had my Zongshen for about 2 weeks now and I'm still facing the same problems I did initially. My speedometer cable was broken so the guy I purchased the bike from sent out a new one AND an entire new gauge assembly to be safe.

So I tried installing the cable today to disappointing results. Installing the cable on the back of the gauge was cake; Screwing it onto the counter was another story. First off, there's like this little octagon thing on the end of the cable that looks like it might need to go into the hole, but I'm not sure.

I finally got it screwed on and was smiling because I thought for sure it would work. It doesn't. Any tips?

Also, My gauge lights only come on if i snap the handlebars all the way to the left. I'm sure it's loose wiring but I'm not sure where to start. Any tips?

Thanks

Sportbikes / Anyone else have a little trouble getting into neutral?
« on: July 31, 2008, 06:28:39 PM »
Often I have to shift up and down and up and down to finally get the bike in neutral. Am I the only one?

Also, I can't seem to turn the key to lock the handlebars. Am I doing it right? (put key in, push down, turn left with handlebars cranked to the left)

Thanks!

Sportbikes / What octane gas does the zongshen use?
« on: July 26, 2008, 10:14:12 PM »
I would assume regular unleaded, but i've seen bikes with labels that say "premium only" I'll be getting my bike delivered Tuesday and wanted to get some gas before it gets here so that as soon as it's assembled I can start it right up. Thanks!

Sportbikes / Basic motorcycle maintenance tips?
« on: July 17, 2008, 08:58:12 AM »
Rob's thread about some rust on the chain concerned me a little bit on keeping the Zongshen running for a long time, and since this will be my first bike, I'd like to know what some basic motorcycle maintenance strategies are. This includes things like winter storage, how often and how to perform oil/filter changes and such. Does anyone have any tips?

Sportbikes / Picture Request thread
« on: July 06, 2008, 10:04:02 AM »
For anyone that has a digital camera and their zongshen handy, I would love to request a picture of the gauges and the key. Or, if it's easier, is there a place where I can already find a bunch of detailed pictures of the gs250? I'd like to know exactly what I'm going to get  ;)

Sportbikes / Where did you buy your bike?
« on: July 05, 2008, 11:42:58 PM »
I'm getting ready to buy my first motorcycle -- the zongshen gs250 of course -- and I'm trying to find places to purchase it from. I know of scooter dynasty from a previous post on this forum, but that's about it. There's no local dealership that sells them, and I'm kicking myself for not nabbing one that was on ebay for $1600 shipped.

I see that on scooter dynasty they run $2200, so I'm a little bummed that my only option if I want a zongshen is to spend $600 more than I could have on ebay (still kicking myself, btw)

So with all that rambling aside, where did you get your bike, and would you recommend it again (if online.) Any tips or suggestions for purchasing, or anything you want to tell me for a first-time bike buyer?

I look forward to contributing lots of ridiculous and stupid questions to the forum. I'm glad I found this place!
