When it comes to the CSC Motorcycles RX3 Cyclone, we might as well confront the elephant in the room straight on: As shown here (windshield, engine guards, luggage) it costs a mere $3,495 new, and that's all some folks will need to hear. It's also made in China, which is maybe all another group will need to hear. Since so few motorcyclists in America have ever ridden a Chinese bike, this alone makes it an interesting riding opportunity. It's also a 250cc adventure bike in a land where most ADV bikes are four or five times larger.

Some backstory: CSC Motorcycles is an Azusa, California-based firm which imports the RX3 Cyclone from Chongqing, China, where it?s built by Zongshen, a company founded in 1992, employing 18,000 and claiming a yearly output of more than a million bikes.

VANCOUVER, Nov. 2 /CNW/ - Zongshen PEM Power Systems Inc. ("ZPP" or the "Company") (TSX:ZPP), is pleased to announce that its Toronto e-motorcycle has been awarded the 2010 China International Motorcycle Trade Exhibition ("CIMA") Innovation Achievement Award. CIMA which has been held since 2002, is the largest and most influential motorcycle exhibition in China and is recognized as one of the top motorcycle shows globally. The exhibition attracts top international and domestic Chinese manufacturers as well as dealers and motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world. This year the four day long event was held in late October and attracted approximately 400 exhibitors and more than 150,000 visitors. The theme of
this year's exhibition was to enhance the brand image of the Chinese motorcycle industry with a particular focus on commuter motorbikes, which account for 99% of all motorbikes sold in China.

ZPP showcased 7 gas bikes, 5 e-bikes and 2 e-motorcycles. The Toronto e-motorcycle is the first electric powered motorcycle to be marketed inside China and was chosen as one of ZPP's feature products. Toronto which was launched in early fall of this year, was more broadly introduced at the CIMA through a dedicated product briefing, media conference and dealer test-drive session.

The China market for electric powered motorcycles and bikes, is forecasted by industry analysts to grow at 11% annually until 2014 when an estimated 32 million electric powered bikes will be sold annually. ZPP believes that initially e-motorcycles will represent a small percentage of the electric powered two wheelers sold in China, but that they will become a more significant segment, driven by the value they provide to Chinese consumers and Chinese government policy supporting low emission vehicles. The current Chinese e-bike market is served by some 2,000 manufacturers that are producing electric bicycles or electric scooters that are comparable to small gas bikes (less than 50 cc) in terms of speed, range and power. The market for these small electric two wheelers is very large, estimated to be over 20 million units in 2010, however due to the fierce competition and low regulatory requirements for safety and quality standards, this business generates very low margins for the manufacturers.

ZPP's strategy is to leverage its gas motorcycle platform in manufacturing, distribution and branding to develop and expand the e-motorcycles and high-end e-bikes offerings. The Company believes that the e-motorcycle and high-end e-bike market will yield better margins per unit because of the higher technology, brand and quality requirements which effectively bar many of the smaller players from entry.

The Toronto e-motorcycle offers customers a revolutionary product in that it utilizes a unique powerful electric engine thereby combining the best features of e-bikes and gas motorcycles. Like an e-bike, the Toronto is low-cost to operate (roughly 1/10th the operating cost of a similar powered gas motorcycle) and is a zero emissions vehicle. The Toronto is differentiated from e-bikes because its engine and electric control system provide range, power and speed comparable to a 110-120 cc gas motorcycle. The Toronto is priced competitively against similar performing gas motorcycles in China, where annual sales of 110-120 cc gas motorcycles are estimated to be 8,000,000 units, making them the most commonly purchased motorcycle size in China.

ZPP also debuted a new 125 cc gas motorcycle called ZS Chuanqi (translated as "ZS Legend") targeted at the young and hip segment of the population. Early reviews from dealers are very positive as they are looking for new motorcycle models that comply with the newly enacted emissions regulations.

"We are very excited to receive recognition for our Toronto e-motorcycle. The award confirms that our technology is the best of class and that we are on the right path in our pursuit of low emissions bikes. I'm convinced that Toronto offers customers in the market for a 110-120 cc gas motorcycle a very compelling alternative choice given that Toronto is not only priced competitively, but is also a zero emissions vehicle and is low cost to operate," said Mr. Zuo Zongshen, Chairman and CEO of ZPP, "The award is a good start but we are at the early stages of introducing the e-motrocycle to the China market. We are committed to further improve our electric vehicles and expand our emotorcycles offerings"

VANCOUVER, Sept. 16

TSX:ZPP

VANCOUVER, Sept. 16 /CNW/ - Zongshen PEM Power Systems Inc. ("ZPP" or the "Company") (TSX:ZPP), today announced that it has launched its new "Toronto" line of electric motorcycles at the inaugural Zongshen PEM International Electric Motorcycle Business Alliance Conference held in the conference centre at the Chongqing headquarters of the Zongshen Industrial Group. The Toronto line was designed to compete on performance and price with 110 cc to 120 cc gas motorcycles in China. Prior to the launch of the Toronto line the Company produced a line of smaller electric bicycles and scooters widely sold in China, which have lower top speed, range and power.

Over 200 dealers from Hubei, Henan, Shandong, Yunan, Hebei and other provinces attended the conference resulting in the first orders for the Toronto line. ZPP plans to focus on establishing distribution in China market in 2010 and then to expand marketing to South East Asia in 2011.

"The successful launch of the Toronto line marks the official release of the first genuine electric motorcycle in China," said Zongshen Zuo, Chairman and CEO of ZPP, "The launch of the Toronto line is the initial stage of the transition of our gas motorcycle lines into electric vehicles. After the acquisition of the gas motorcycle business in July 2010, ZPP is well positioned to fully leverage the high volume supply chain, production facilities and technologies for gas motorcycles to produce a full line of electric motorcycles. In addition, since the Toronto line is comparable to 110 cc to 120 cc gas motorcycles, it is a better fit for our gas motorcycle distribution network that includes some 7,000 domestic dealers than our e-bike and e-scooter products. While there is still a very large and growing market in China and globally for our gas motorcycles, ZPP intends to be a leader in the long term world trend towards environmentally friendly, no emission electric vehicles."

The market for 110 cc to 120 cc gas motorcycles in China is estimated to be about 8,000,000 units per year. The Toronto line will be priced to compete in this segment, providing customers with similar performance at less than one tenth of the annual operating cost. In addition, many cities in China have banned the issuance of new gas motorcycle licences, so the Toronto line will offer customers an electric product with more power, speed and range than the e-bikes currently available in China. Since ZPP is the first company to launch an electric motorcycle product in China, it believes it can earn better margins than those in the very competitive, low margin China market for e-bikes and scooters.

The Company has registered seven design patents for its new electric motorcycle line and is using a unique power system to deliver better performance than the electric products now widely sold in China. The initial Toronto line uses lead acid batteries to keep the price in line with comparable 110 cc to 120 cc gas motorcycles sold in China and South East Asia. International manufacturers and consumers in North America, Europe and Japan tend to use and demand lithium batteries that improve performance, but also drastically increase price. Accordingly, ZPP believes that it is a unique product for the China and South East Asia market, that can be upgraded to a lithium battery for western markets.

Following the closing of the acquisition of the Motorcycle Business on July 2, 2010, the Company has become one of the major two-wheeled motorcycle manufacturers in China with over 3,000 employees and expanded product offerings of up to 500cc gas motorcycles. In the year ended December 31, 2009 the Motorcycle Business had revenue of over RMB 1.8 billion ($276 million) and net profit of approximately RMB 110 million ($17 million). ZPP plans to leverage the manufacturing infrastructure, technology, brand and distribution of its profitable and growing gas motorcycle business to develop a full line of electric motorcycles as the initial step to being a leader in the China and global market for low emission vehicles.

Hang Out / Zongshen PEM Second Quarter 2009 Financial Results
« on: August 13, 2009, 02:35:03 PM »
TSX:ZPP

VANCOUVER, Aug. 13 /CNW/ - Zongshen PEM Power Systems Inc. ("ZPP" or the "Company") (TSX:ZPP), today announced its financial results for the three-month and six-month periods ended June 30, 2009. All currency amounts referred to in this news release are in Canadian dollars unless stated otherwise.

For the three-month period ended June 30, 2009, the Company reported revenues of $5.3 million versus $7.1 million in the corresponding quarter a year ago. Volume sales during the second quarter of 2009 totalled 14,153 units, compared with 22,715 units in the second quarter of 2008. Second quarter results continued to be negatively impacted by the lack of unit sales due to lack of consumer spending in China, and lower export volumes. As a result of lower volume sales and ongoing fixed costs leading to lower capacity utilization, gross margin during the quarter decreased to 7 percent versus 16 percent during the corresponding period in 2008. During the quarter, the Company reported a net loss amounting to $943,890 or $0.01 per share, versus a net income of $484,553 or $0.01 per share for the second quarter of 2008.

For the six-month period ended June 30, 2009 the Company reported revenues of $13.1 million versus $13.6 million in the corresponding period a year ago. Volume sales during the first six-month period in 2009 totalled 35,273 units, compared with 46,128 units during the same period in 2008. During the six-month period, the Company reported a net loss of $801,257, or $0.01 per share, versus a net income of $360,175, or $0.01 per share.

At June 30, 2009, the Company was debt free with cash and cash equivalents amounting to $39.5 million, compared to $41.6 million at March 31, 2009 and $33.3 million at December 31, 2008. During the quarter, the Company deployed $1.9 million towards the construction of its Chongqing production facility. The Company's strong balance sheet enables ZPP to weather the current economic downturn while having the ability to explore and complete select partnerships and acquisitions.

"We continued to experience the negative impacts of the market downturn in our business during the quarter, however we initialized a restructuring initiative at the operational level which is expected to drive efficiencies and growth once consumer demand for premium bikes and scooters return to historical levels," noted Zongshen Zuo, Chairman and CEO of Zongshen PEM Power Systems Inc. "We continue to be optimistic that the second half of 2009 will demonstrate much stronger demand and performance as our main markets and distributors demand more product. We are also hopeful to secure certain strategic partnerships which will allow ZPP to enjoy improved capacity utilization and ramp up revenues through market share gain."

ZPP continues to expect 2009 to be a challenging year for the organic growth of its bike and scooter products. Based on the current business climate, the Company expects lower revenues and sales volume in 2009 compared to the results achieved in 2008. However, the Company is well positioned to advance its growth strategy with a solid foundation in e-bikes and small gas bikes, a strong balance sheet, a large market for its products and a major shareholder and partner with assets and resources that can be leveraged to gain competitive advantages. The Company continues to evaluate and review strategic growth opportunities through partnerships and acquisitions, which would complement its existing business.

The Company will host a conference call on Friday, August 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., Eastern Standard Time (EST) to further discuss the second quarter 2009 financial and operational results.
