Sportbikes / Re: 45mph top speed on 250?
« on: February 21, 2011, 12:18:11 PM »
I have noticed that since i put an iridum plug (and gapped it correctly) as well as changing the oil over to a synthetic blend, it revs up much higher/smoother.  I get mine up to near 70 on flat roads and i weigh almost 250lbs.

good luck on finding parts.  Your best bet is to scour ebay for people who may ahve parted out old bikes or try to find/adapt parts from a different bike.

Spud, you have said that you have the FMF Universal Spark Arrestor instead of the stock muffler.

The description says that it is excellent for 2-stroke.  Is your bike 2 stroke or does it work equally well on a 4 stroke?

I would help you out, but I have no real knowledge of electrical systems on motorcycles.  Best thing I could do is get info out of the maintainance manual (which sucks btw) and get wiring diagrams.  Sorry.

It talks about the carbs off of the Dual sport Sierra 200GY2.  It has pretty much the same carb except for a bore difference (28mm sierra vs 30mm 250gs).

Haven't tried putting in the new jets yet, but for less than 20 bucks for a few jets, I'm gonna try it.

Usually it should only be the main jet but the necessity of a jet changes comes when you add more air (ie a conical filter). Its not always necessary if you only put on a different exhaust.

Sportbikes / Carb Swap

Since fuel and air seem to be the biggest things that could help improve the performance on these bikes and we all seem to have trouble with adjusting/rejetting the carb, has anyone thought about swapping out the carb for a similar but more common one (ie. one with more aftermarket support)?  Shouldn't it be as easy as finding another carb with similar linkage and base plate?

I got mine up to 9k with no probs the other day.  Getting too cold to really go out riding, so it might have to wait until next spring.

BTW, Any new info with the SigmaSix rejet kit?

Once I upgraded my spark plug to an iridium, it seemed to rev up higher without shutting off.  When I had it poorly gapped, it would cut out at lower rpms, but something similiar.  So I might try either regapping your existing plug or upgrading it to an iridum and having it gapped at .025" (thats what mine is at).  I don't know about how restrictive the filter/airbox is, I still have the stock intake system and have not changed any carb settings.

Sportbikes / Iridium Plug
« on: November 23, 2010, 11:38:15 AM »
I just installed a new iridium plug that I bought from NAPA (NGK 6681).  At first I gapped it closer to .7mm and I had difficulty getting it started and when it idled, the exhaust smelled rich.  As I revved it up it would sputter and cut out around 4k.  I pulled the plug and regapped it to .025" (.635 mm) put it back in and it ran great.  Idle seems much smoother than stock.  It revved up higher, smoother, and faster than the stock.  I've only been testing it on my swingarm stand and haven't had a chance to take it out on the street yet as it is raining here in CA.

Next goal is a conical filter and sigma6 rejet kit.

Sportbikes / Re: grinding/squealing noise

yea, ive checked most of the moving parts.  It seems to be only a recent development so I don't think its necessarily an allignment prob.  I was testing out the brakes yesterday to see if that caused/changed the noise and you guys are right, i think it might be uneven braking.  when I would lightly squeeze the front lever, it would change the sound.  So, I will keep an eye on it and report back later.

Actually, it happens mostly when the wheel is turned, to the left in particular.  Thats why I figured it might be the speedo housing.  Ive felt/inspected the rotors and haven't noticed any irregular wear, but Ill give it a few hundred more miles and see what happens.

I have been hearing a kind of squealing/griding noise intermittently coming from my front tire when it is rolling at low speeds (I assume its there at higher speeds but I can't hear it).  I noticed that the nut that connects the speedo cable to the housing was backed off pretty far and had leaked some sort of fluid/grease.  I tightened down the cap.  Should I just relube the cable or take off the entire housing and regrease the entire thing?  Any ideas or am I looking at the completely wrong thing?

Hey darealestspigguh, when you switched over to the cone filter, did you rejet your carb? If so, which ones did you use and where did you get them?  If not, what did you do to readjust your carb?  Thanks.

I was doing some research and it looks like it might be from a CRF230.  The GS is actually a 230 and I don't think many other bike makers have a 230cc engine...
