its puropose is to relive oil pressure... even if you don't have a filter on it still does its job but i sugesst alteast puting a breather filter on so you don't get crap in the motor... but yeah, thats all its there for the reason it is fitted to the air box is to follow emissions requirements... like if you live in cali this mod may not be doable because of law in some parts... but all in all its like changing your exhaust you can in some areas and others you just have to deal with it...

Hang Out / Re: Riding Peeves

Im alittle late to this post But I got a few pet peves of my own, mainly its other drivers since they are bigger they think you'll bow down before them and let them own the road...

In south florida I get alot of people that will cut you off then slam on their brakes, I've used the little stripe in the road to avoid so many accidents you wouldn't belive it,

Then you have the people who just come over into your lane unannouced without looking and you have to basicly ride the line agian.

my fav is when you try to get over and people wont let you, I think its funny on my suzuki because I can go faster than they could dream of so why on earth speed up when I try to get over...

But the thing that drives me crazy is that everyone wants to race you... I am not about to get a ticket for something stupid.

Yeah its a pain getting to the airbox or battery, You have to take off the seat and the whole side panel, The air box is on the left side when sitting on the bike and the battery is on the right... When you take off the panel there is a screw under the mud flap thing It wont come out without removing that and you don't need to completely remove it, just have it move away enough to get a screw driver and wrench under... and if its your first time removing one of these panels there is a part that just pops in and out without screws so if it catches thats normal just wiggle it out....

If your going to mess with the air box there is alittle clear plastic tube sealed shut clamped on, take it off and that will drain any oil you have in the airbox, make sure to put the piece back on after. As for the peice you need to plug up anything that will seal it possibly even duct tape but that is a temp fix, I just cut the hose shorter and caped it off.

of course I just bought the bike acouple days ago the dealer had put to much oil in (which is making me have to do an oil change)... But even after the oil level is right the airbox can still create a vacume effect, which can cause small amounts of oil to be pulled up and I would rather not have any oil in my airbox.

but you are very much right Be sure to check your oil with the bike straight up and down, My dealer didn't even know that, and he has been driving his for around 6000 miles with too much oil and every time it would go down to the proper level he would fill it back up, He found out that he had been doing it wrong when I spoke to him today (I guess most beginers don't know that so nobody ever noticed)...

Sportbikes / The cheapest mods with the most effect with little effort
« on: August 12, 2009, 12:32:04 PM »
Well I decided I wanted to modify my bike alittle I don't need more hp but would like better responsiveness ect... And didn't want to spend too much, or put too much effort into it.

there are three things to look into:

- A breather filter to replace the tube that goes to the air box... This keeps you from having oil sucked up
into your carbs at high rpms, This mod cost about $10 and all your doing is replacing a tube with a filter, Make sure you plug up the port in the air box after. The size I got for the breather was 3/8"-1/2" if they don't have one that gives a range like that its more toward's the 1/2".

-better spark plugs, this is almost an obvious one because its around $10 at the most and it gives you much better spark, I recomend the Ngk iridum.

-High perfomance air filter for about $25, no I don't mean a cone filter, It is very easy to modify your stock filter its is just a peice of foam screwed between 2 plastic peices... I had an Uni filter I was going to put into my suzuki before it brokedown (the type that you don't have to rejet for, Any brand foam filter will do just make sure it is ok for a stock replacement).

here is the step by step:
unscrew the two plastic peices and remove the old foam filter
-I cut out the two layers of foam from the uni with a steak knife
-I cut holes into the center of each layer
-I lined up the holes with the plasic holders and screwed it all back together
-Then just cut off the excess.

It is very important that if you use a uni you make sure the denser foam is facing the carb and the lighter foam is facing the air hole.

With these three mods I spent less than $50 and got far better throttle response, more power at lower rpms, and No random bogging at high speeds.

It is a very easy mod, All you do is remove the tube that goes from the crankcase to the air box and slide the breater filer on you do have to plug up the air box where the connection was... As far as knowing what to get its just a breather filter the one I got was for sizes 3/8"-1/2" and it fit perfectly and they only cost about $10 at pep boys...

If your not sure what hose Im talking about its the one that is where my filter is, you may notice I don't have a clamp on it, Its so tight of a fit it really doesn't need one, but mainly its because it was in my way...

And I did have a good half a quart of oil in my airbox... I found it when I went to modify the air filter (which is also easy) and it blew my mind...

from what I hear this is one of the main issues with the design, I myself am going to head out to an auto parts store and pick up a breather filter and just remove the tube and give it its own stand alone setup... and you shouldn't have the problems in the future...

« on: August 11, 2009, 01:34:31 AM »
yeah I had a similar issue, Its forcing me to do a oil change... But Im also thinking I'll take off the breather hose (the hose that comes from your crank case into the air box) from the air filter and get a stand alone breather, so I wont have these problems in the future, I hear that At high rpms It can siphone oil up the tube because the restriction of the air box... don't want to take chances...

Sportbikes / Re: Survey: Who's put the most mileage on their GS250?
« on: August 10, 2009, 01:09:47 AM »
well the guy I bought mine from has over 6000miles, and still runs like its new, he let me compair his to mine, but he said the big thing is to not push the bikes... 70mph on these is like doing 100+ on a ninja, the higher the rpms the more wear on the motor, here if you stay off the highway our roads have a speed limit of 45mph, so i figure I can still speed alittle and not hurt the bike but if you want to go faster, I seen threads on different forums about changing out the sprocket one guy put a 36 tooth rear on and said he got up to 75mph in fith gear at around the 5-6 mark on the tac.

I just got mine for $700 and it has 2400miles but the guy I bought it from the one he rides has over 6000, He said the reason it still runs so good is he never takes the highway and 55 is the fastest he pushes it. After all these bikes arn't ninja's they were not designed for high speed, Basicly they are scooters for people who don't want to be seen on scooters, at least thats how I look at it.

I personaly just got my 250gs today and After giving it a good ride, I can say I wouldn't drive it more than 60mph in its current state without killing your motor, But If you were to change out the sprockets you could get a much higher speed at lower rpms, I would recomend getting a replacement rear sprocket with around 36-38 teeth, since its smaller it will turn faster, you loose alittle on take of, but lets face it, These bikes arn't exactly ment to tear it up off the line.

oddly enough that is exactly how streetfighters started, a bunch of people would drop their bikes while stunting and would do what they could with the little money they had to get it back on the road.

If you did change the airbox, you would need to either hook this system into the new filter, or cap it off.
You could always extend the tube and have it work as a overflow
