I'm not sure if it's good or not yet Rob. Yes definitely don't go back to the dealer for any more repairs. The whole thing sounds like a worst nightmare!
As for the speedo miles, they must have damaged the guages while removing fuel tank or something. Sounds like they dropped the fuel tank on the guages which damaged the guages and dented your fuel tank. That's why youve got a dented fuel tank and new guages. Also sounds like they forgot to reconnect the fuel guage sender connector under the fuel tank-what a disaster!

re that broken speedo.....Don't forget these bikes come with a 10000km/6000mile/2 year Warranty on parts and labour, so getting that speedo fixed should be a breeze. Some of the zong owners report they have had issues with the dealers in getting warranty work done so perhaps you can report back with the results of your repair to the speedo when you arrange. We might need a separate topic to report on the responses to requests for repair work.

On the original topic though, My bike has done about 5000km, 3 oil changes, retensioned chain a couple of times and realigned rear wheel ie just standard maintenance, otherwise no other issues.

Now I'm getting interested in seeing if this company is as keen as they say they are to ensure customer satisfaction. I notice their China website is set up to report complaints. Why not send a complaint to the top of the ladder? this is the link direct to their complaint page?

OK Robbie-I understand that you too are peeved . But once again the dealer is the main problem in your case. He is slow to respond. It sounds like he knew the winter would put you off the road for a few months and concentrated on his prime business ie selling new bikes. Remember at Xmas time every dealer is using all his available manpower to sell new bikes in order to stay afloat. He doesn't want to spend time on maintenance and repairs.
You mention that you have contacted the dealer principal for zongshen, Nic , so why don't you go to him direct and make a formal complaint. If he has sent a new engine over then he is paying for the repair under warranty, so let him know they are stalling with the exchange engine (no pun intended) and that you intend to go to the local TV station or media if he doesn't get that bike back to you in say 10-days.

 Yes your treatment by the dealer is outrageous so give him a good kick and good luck!

Yes Myth its disappointing all right in your case and that wait would definitely change my perception of the bikes reliability. But ive only had to change the oil 3 times in 4500km and that is it. Ive adjusted the clutch free play but not touched the engine otherwise. You just had some bad luck or else perhaps you misadjusted the valve timing or something. I also ran mine in fairly carefully in the first 1000km not exceeding 70kmph-although i notice some people, including mechanics disagree on the need for gentle runin period- changed the oil  twice as per the book and everything has been going fine. Maybe i'll have a different view in another 5000km but i'll have to see.
i bought mine off the shop floor fully assembled,  and the laws here do protect consumers fairly well. It sounds like your main gripe is with a tardy dealer so you can't really blame zongshen for that because the dealer may be bulldusting you about the delay.  I'd be asking to see his proof that he is doing something to speed things along or ask for a refund and put some more pressure on him.

Hope you get it up and working before too much longer!

Well spotted Rob. i don't know anything about the Yamaha but I did suspect that the Z was based on a earlier model Yamaha when I was looking thru a M/C Tech maintenance book that showed photos of a Yamaha engine and the oil filter and housing pictured and engine pic were pretty much identical to the Zong.
But to take it a bit further, my guess is that the major bike manufacturers like Honda/Suzuki and Yamaha are outsourcing parts manufacturing to Zongshen China in order to reduce their manufacturing costs. We already know that  Harley Davidson are engaged in some sort of talks in relation to market sharing arrangements and a company like Harley wouldn't talk with someone who didn't have a good reputation.  I think this can only make us feel a bit more confidant that we bought ourselves ok bikes and not heaps of sh**.

Mines done about 4000km (2500mile) since new and is definitely running better now with this mileage on it. Mostly I would ride 2-3 hr continuous at say 70-90 kmph(45-55mph). There's no o/heating but the revs are about 5000rpm at 70kmph in top. To do the mph you want maybe you could swap the rear cog for a couple of teeth less seeing that you sound like you not interested in stop start acceleration. You might be able to lower the engine revs that way and get a better top speed. Someone else on this forum might be able to confirm if this is a good idea or else check with a bike shop.

While having a look under the seat I noticed the end of this hose dangling. The only ref to it in the book is it may be a secondary air filter. Something to do with anti-pollution. The other end is cnnected to an air pump located near the rt side horn(see the photo below).
Someone mentioned in this forum, I think, that it should be connected at other end to the air box but although this is where the end is sitting/hanging, I see no inlet/outlet on the air box to connect it to. There is also no clamp on the hose at this end. Idon't think it is affecting the running of the bike but if this is how it sits it doesn't seem very well designed.

Anyone got any ideas about it?

Not sure about that one but you probably know that the reserve tank is not a separate tank, it's just a lower point (last 2 litres) in the tank where the fuel is drained from so that shouldn't make any difference if your fuel is contaminated.

 With all the rain you've had maybe you did get a bit of water in the fuel. May need to drain tank before topping up again. Also just on the issue of the possibility of getting water in the fuel, I noticed on mine when you close the lock cap on the tank after filling up, it pays to press down on cap  a bit more after closing it til you hear a "click",  as the gasket there needs a extra bit of pressure to lock the cap  (-or at least mine does). I noticed that problem because I could usually smell strong smell of fuel coming from the cap days after filling up.

The red light for battery sounds like your battery is a bit low on charge so I would definitely put it on charge for a day with a bike bat charger. Don't use a car battery charger though as I hear the charge rate is too high and it will cook the battery!! Other than that I would check the bike maintenance manual as it has some useful diagnostic pages in the back pages. Your problem sounds like you may need a bit of help from someone with hands on that can help you out there.  Good luck!

Hmmm seems you might have a dud there, mines done about 4000km now and the oil level hasn't changed in last 2000km. So maybe just bad luck with yours.!

Not a problem, but just a comment here.
My bike has done now about 4000km from new and it is running better- easier to start, smoother sound and gear changes so maybe this bike is quite well made at least in trhe engine/gear box mechanicals as it seems to have taken a long time to properly run in. Anyone else find this applies to their bike?

good point msr, I noticed the battery (red)light on my bike dash was flickering a bit - but only on idle.
 Later I took  the seat off and checked the electrical connectors and found that the regulator connector was unplugged. Plugged it back in and all ok.
