Yeh Rob, I like the exploded views. I'd love to see the service manuals! Are they in PDF or downloadable format??
By the way the full parts list is also available on the Zongshen website as a downloadable PDF file for those who want the manufacturers file. Follow this link. http://www.zongshen.com.au/downloads/ZS250GS.pdf

I have the paper back service manual. I can scan sections i supose?

Ah good one. That could be useful for spares one day. Just on the outside the engine cover of the Kawa does'nt look as much like the Zong as the Yamaha does. But you're the mechanic so I'll take your word for it!
Well, I've been wrong before.......And the side cases of the 'lil Zong does look a lot like the Yamaha. BUT the rest of the engine (exhaust port exit side and other stuff) are a match to the Kawi. Someone had mentioned that the Honda was the direct fitment, though I haven;t found anything from honda that even remotely resembles the Zong.

Sportbikes / Re: Spark Plug maybe?
« on: May 28, 2009, 08:42:38 PM »
Well, thats EXACTLY what my 'lil Pak mule was doing. You are likely getting oil into your air box and it's running very rich.
On the left side of your bike, there is a plastic nipple on the lower side of the air box. It's kinda up behind the side panel, below the seat. Pull off the clamp and drain plug(it will look yellow/brown/orangeish pinched off tube) and drain out the oil from your air box. After awhile your engine could injest enough oil to hydroloc , like mine did, and thats NO FUN!!!
Now I've noticed that ALOT of these are running RICH!!! (I lowered the needle in the carb from the lowest notch to the 4th notch. HOW DID THIS GET CALIFORNIA CERTTIFICATION, I'LL NEVER KNOW!!!) And at freeway speeds, the engine will draw oil through the vent tube and into the air box and ofcourse into the carb causing the bogging. Mine was so bad, it left a plume of blue smoke from muffler.
Also check the vent tube at the air box, where it is SUPOSE to go around the frame. Mine was pinched off and collected oil like a resovioure.
I also re gapped my plug to 28 thousands(initially it was at 18) and picked up some torque and its eaiser to start and idle.
Now the air filter is VERY restrictive and at prolonged hi speeds the engine will syphon oil from the engine case.  I removed the hose comming the crank case to the air box, from the air box and routed it towards the swing arm and installed a small filter. I get -0- oil in the air box and -0- oil from the vent tube. ALL IS WELL!!!! (plug the hole left open on the air box too)
My engine hydrolocked 3 times and destroyed itself. I now have a new engine that actually runs pretty well.

Hope this helps.

« on: May 03, 2009, 08:43:37 AM »
Well the engine is a Kawasaki KZ/KL250 clone from the late 70's through the 80's. NOT A YAMAHA!!!! The yamaha looks VERY similar except, the exhaust port is on the WRONG side of the head.
IT IS A KAWASAKI CLONE!!!!    SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-[ :-[ :-[

As for the speedo miles, they must have damaged the guages while removing fuel tank or something. What a disaster!

Well the milage is now pretty far off and when a Dealer replaces an odometer they are supose to either adjust the new one to match the original OR afix a sticker to the vehicle noting the discrepancy. They didn't..... and , YES it was a NIGHTMARE!!!!  245 miles ONEWAY to them(3 times not including the initial purchase) and I couldn't get them on the phone or barly to respond to a BUNCH of e-mails.  I'm glad to have it back....even if it's 25 degrees F. outside.
If it pops again I'll find a Yamaha 250 or 350 to put in. I hope it remains a solid bike as there are SO many of them around the world. Mine had to be the one built on Friday afternoon at the end of the month near inventory time....Or something like that!!!!  lol!!!  The rest of the bike is kinda nice!!!
Well I have spring to look foward to now!!!!
Bye.

:D
I have my 'lil Pak Mule back!!!!   New engine installed!!!!!   It has some power now!!!!
BUT!!!!!!!!   (   )  They dented my tank, left out two lower faring bolts and the front engine cover bolt, and now the fuel gage is inop. To top this off, I now have 3 (three) miles on the odometer. I took it to them with 1201 miles.....Hmmm.
Well, I have it back and it will NEVER go back to KANYON ATV in Panguich Utah. Their lack of service is only surpassed by their compleate INCOMPATINCE and IN-abillity to tell the same story TWICE!!!!!!!!!!!
I rode my 'Lil pak Mule around my neighborhood for about 15 minutes in 25 degree(F) weather, AND SMILING THE WHOLE TIME!! (cause my face was froze that way after 20 seconds lol) No more "little man tring to escape from the engine cases" knock, no more SMOKING and HYDROLOCING!!!  YIPPIE!!!! (this week)
Well I'll putt  it around a little more and then PACK IT AWAY for the winter with the other bikes!!
It's really HOME!!!!!(sobbing with joy!!!!! )

Well the dealer called and says MY BIKE IS DONE!!!!!!!     (we'll see....) I'll pick it up next week!!!!!  It'll be sink or swim for the dealer. To sue, or not to sue....THAT is their options. ie fixed or not.

OK Robbie-I understand that you too are peeved . But once again the dealer is the main problem in your case. He is slow to respond. It sounds like he knew the winter would put you off the road for a few months and concentrated on his prime business ie selling new bikes. Remember at Xmas time every dealer is using all his available manpower to sell new bikes in order to stay afloat. He doesn't want to spend time on maintenance and repairs.
You mention that you have contacted the dealer principal for zongshen, Nic , so why don't you go to him direct and make a formal complaint. If he has sent a new engine over then he is paying for the repair under warranty, so let him know they are stalling with the exchange engine (no pun intended) and that you intend to go to the local TV station or media if he doesn't get that bike back to you in say 10-days.

Yes your treatment by the dealer is outrageous so give him a good kick and good luck!

I have filed a complaint with Nick and have had no action.  I have been incontact with Nick 4 times now and the dealer 3 times that amount.
I know that there will be an occasional glitch in every vehicle line. I understand this fully ,being a professional mechanic 29 years at the dealer, custom and at the factory Proto-type/development levels.
I have great hopes for the 'lil Zong, I have enjoyed it emencilly the short time I had it. BUT the amount of time to get an engine sent and then all else that's happened, Zongshen is on the line also.
I don't want to sound like I'm bashing the 'lil Zong, I REALLY like it. I just have had a bad experiance in dealing with anybody with it.
As far as the media, I have been incontact with local media, they are concidering it.....
Most likely I'll have to get legal represenitation and pursue it out that way.
AGAIN I LIKE MY 'LIL ZONG ALOT!!!!! :D

I'm not going to pay $170.50/month for something I can't ride.  I didn't have a problem with it when I had it, but paying him and not even having the bike is BS.

I hope nobody else ends up needing an engine for this little guy, cause you'll die waiting on it...

I'm really sorry to hear your getting shafted like me Zuki...  Good luck my friendm, I hope you get the little pak mule back soon.

Well at least you can stop paying for it.  Mines payed in full.  I'M SO SCREWED!!!!!!!
After the hollidays, I'm going to pick my bike up and start legal proceedings against them and Zongshen. I wonder how Nick will respond to a being called to Salt Lake City from Florida. I know he'll just send legal services but, it might be worth it to them to resolve this BEFORE it costs Zongshen more than the bike is worth.
As far as the dealer, I'll keep at it till a resolution is made.

Well Myth, Hope your plight comes to a satisfactory resolution, SOON!!!!!!  ( )

Oh, And my Marine son.....An update. He's in the brige right now. I guess the Lt caused enough trouble to have him detained till mid January when he will be dischargede. The Lt didn't feel safe with him loose(WUSS!!!!)  Luckly the aggerement will get him an Honerable discharge and all of his bennies.(after 6mos of discharge?) Oh well.....

Yes Myth its disappointing all right in your case and that wait would definitely change my perception of the bikes reliability. But ive only had to change the oil 3 times in 4500km and that is it. Ive adjusted the clutch free play but not touched the engine otherwise. You just had some bad luck or else perhaps you misadjusted the valve timing or something. I also ran mine in fairly carefully in the first 1000km not exceeding 70kmph-although i notice some people, including mechanics disagree on the need for gentle runin period- changed the oil  twice as per the book and everything has been going fine. Maybe i'll have a different view in another 5000km but i'll have to see.
i bought mine off the shop floor fully assembled,  and the laws here do protect consumers fairly well. It sounds like your main gripe is with a tardy dealer so you can't really blame zongshen for that because the dealer may be bulldusting you about the delay.  I'd be asking to see his proof that he is doing something to speed things along or ask for a refund and put some more pressure on him.
Hope you get it up and working before too much longer.

WOW, you rode twice the milage as I have and apperantly have a nice 'lil bike, I envy you. I still don't have mine back.
Mine has given me trouble from mile one. It was assembled and I rode it home. I did a careful 500ish miles and changed the oil twice in that period.
At mile 15 my bike spewed oil smoke out the muffler like an old locomotive and partially filled the air box with oil. I returned it to the shop, THEY DID NOTHING but keep it for 2 weeks. I got it back and at 300miles it hydrolocked at ~ 50 mph. That was fun!!! I returned it again and this time it had a rattle in the engine. Ofcourse the dealer found NOTHING WRONG again and it sounds normal. at 1201 miles it locked hard at ~ 65 mph and started ratteling/ knocking badly. The dealer has had it since September. and as of my last speaking with them, they had this to say, "This is not a precission built engine. They will smoke on start up, ALL singles do. And the noise is'nt that bad. It's all in the top end." To which I replied, "No, all single cylinders DO NOT smoke and rattle like this. Then I went into my professional history as a MECHANIC for 30 years, and then I told him that a single cyl.is not rocket science and the noise is unexceptable and NOT NORMAL!!!  Then he went as far as saying that "Well why can't I get the bike to lock up or belch smoke like you CLAIM!" (rose his voice on claim) I responded I don't know, why can't you????
Then he said" well people monkey with things and try to claim damage to get knew parts, for all I know YOU loosened the valves to make the rattle"
And that all but ended our conversation. I instructed him to put the engine in that Nick Lin (of Zongshen America) had sent him a MONTH AGO!!!
So I'm really ticked at the dealer and am ?hopeful? of the 'lil Zong.  It is an EMENCLY popular bike in the Phillipeens and Asian markets.
Well enough  of that.  I may just up grade the engine to an XT350(If it's not too tall!) and have 6 gears, 4 valves, twin cams and 30 hp if the 'lil 250 isn't up to the task that is.
Time will tell.
To those that have had good luck with the 'lil Zong, KEEP RIDING!!!!  I loved putting my 'lil Pakmule around. I miss it alot.(Well now we have 8inches of snow so... )

Sportbikes / ENGINE CLONED FROM....
« on: December 14, 2008, 03:38:03 PM »
The ZS250GS engine seems to be a clone of the yamaha 250 Exciter AND or the 1977ish XT250 dual purp. They look almost exactly alike. I beliver the years are from ~1980 - 1990 on the Exciter and Not sure on the XT.. Well there should be ALOT of parts avalible for the yamaha. I'll be comparing parts REALLY SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Well The Dealer STILL HAS MY 'Lil Pak Mule.....GGGRRRRRRRR!  They called me afew weeks ago and told me the engine was in. Today I get a call and all they are going to do is ADJUST MY VALVES!!!!!!!  Now Nick Lin of Zongshen has ALREADY sent them an engine. The mechanic told me the engin they recieved was for another bike, THEN later in the conversation, He tells me that he cannot install the engine because it's it 2(TWO) pieces!!!!  BROKEN!!!!  I've e-mailed Nick AGAIN (fourth time now) to ask if I can do the install myself and send back the core. I hope so!!!  The mechanic said he WILL have the NEW engine installed before I hear back from Nick. Hmm, We'll see on that. I know they have a used engin in their shop. I HOPE they don't stuff that one in.

RANT!!!!!  RAVE!!!!!!  STOMP!!!!!! SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to see if Nick can get me the NEW engine serial number to me so I can check it against the one they SAID they were installing.
I kinda hope they install a used engin so I can sue the crap out of them!!!!!
It's been to them 3 times now and still no resolution........I'M TICKED OFF BIG TIME!!!!!!!
The mechanic said "this is not a precission built engine, IT WILL SMOKE upon start up and consume oil, ALL singles do."   GEEZ, I'de hate to be THAT STUPID!!!!
It ONLY smoked while injesting enough oil to HYDROLOC!!!!  And after 3 times of that and finally destroying it's self to the point that it sounds like a little man is trying to escape from the engine with a little hammer and a bagg of marbles rolling around. NOW it smokes. He said it's normal and the noise isn't that bad....I haven't used their name YET, But if this keeps up, I'll start a web page and put a blog on E-Bay,which is where I bought it.
Well That's ALMOST enough ranting.
Hope Myth is haveing better luck than I.   (Mis my "lil Pak Mule :( )
